yurts camping
travel plan for Yosemite?

Hi,

We are planning to take our first trip to Yosemite in May. I need suggestions for planning the trip with a 2 year old and a 4 year old. We have never camped before. I heard about Yurts which sounds like a good option. I need to know what is the best and cheapest way to have a fun 3 day trip in Yosemite. We will be traveling from Central coast California.

Something fun and different you might be able to do at Yosemite is see “moon bows”. If you are going around a full moon if you take the short walk to lower Yosemite falls you can see “moon bows” at night, which are sliver arcs like rainbows but without the different colors. If your kids can stay up late enough for the sun to set they are a fun thing to see. If you take the drive to Glacier Point (which is a drive but worth the view) you might be able to see a bear too. A “resident” bear of the park likes to hang out there (in the trees of course ) so when you go to Glacier Point just ask a ranger if they have seen any bears today and hopefully the bear is hanging out there. When we went the bear had just left an hour ago so hopefully you have better luck! Bridle Vail Falls is a short hike too but I don’t know if the trail will be open when you are going it depends on how strong the falls are. You are going at a great time since the falls should be full of water compared to late summer when they are just a trickle.
Oh if you are driving I have a random tip. When we drove coming up from San Fransisco the cheapest gas wasn’t the one a few miles outside the park but actually the one in the park. So don’t do what we did and think you are smart filling up before you get in the park because it isn’t cheaper (at least when we were there last summer).
Also look into doing the Junior Ranger Program. If you stop by the visitor center ask a ranger about the program. My sister’s loved doing them in each of the national parks when they were little. They are designed for kids to do different things in the park to earn a badge. So one time my sisters had to find three different mammals, identify three different trees, attend a ranger walk, etc and they always had a blast doing those and loved that they got a badge at the end.
Hope some of this helps. You are going to have so much fun. Yosemite is one of my favorite national parks.
