Devon is one of the most stunning regions of England and a magnificent coastline and the vast field that is easy to see why this is one of the premier vacation destinations popular. In particular, South Hams, which is located in South Devon, offers the perfect place for a family vacation or romantic weekend. The proximity to the coast means there are a variety of water based activities, beautiful beaches and charming seaside towns, and with an abundance of accommodation from luxury hotels, campsites and rural houses will be plenty of choice.

Coastline and Beaches

The South Devon coast offers picturesque holiday with a variety of activities water, sandy beaches, rugged coastal cliffs and picturesque villages. Leisure activities range from sailing, kayaking and surfing, and for those seeking something more adventurous Why not try kite surfing day. Dartmouth

Dartmouth is one of the most stunning coastal cities and with its narrow streets, landscapes, Elizabethan, boutiques, reputation for good food and spectacular views of the River Dart is easy to see why it is considered the "jewel in the South Hams. The natural deep water port has been the driving force of history city as a port and military center. Accommodation here is easy to find, either camping, holiday homes houses on the coast or luxury hotel in Devon, there is something for everyone. Dartmouth Castle, built in 1488 is a must, since it is one of the most picturesque forts, located in England.

Salcombe

Salcombe is protected within the Kingsbridge Estuary and making the pedestrian streets has remained quiet and traditional charm. It was, and remains nautical city and even has its own maritime museum. Here the streets are lined with beautiful boutique shops and galleries.

Kingsbridge

Located at the head of the estuary, the market town of Kingsbridge is known as the capital of the South Hams. Shortly after the Norman Conquest, and Kingsbridge land surrounding its entry into the possession of Buckfast Abbey and in 1219 the abbot was granted permission to hold a market in the city. His monks sell their production honey, fruit and vegetable market and there are still weekly farmers markets, held the first Saturday of the month.

Attractions family

South Hams is ideal for family outings. The many beaches around provide the perfect place to unwind and relax with the kids and a picnic. As mentioned earlier, Blackpool Sands is a bright family sheltered sandy beach in an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are many rock bands that are excellent to explore with the children. Other family attractions include Pennywell Farm, Buckfastleigh and located in Woodlands Adventure Park in Dartmouth. Travel farther and head to Plymouth to visit the National Maritime Museum Interactive, which is great for older children.

After spending the last few summers in the South Hams we have explored and stayed in some fabulous places – we’ve camped with the kids in Salcombe and spent a number of romantic weekends in our favourite hotel in the beautiful spot of Dartmouth, The Dart Marina.
