I was having dinner last week with Jeff and Michelle – two of my clients first dog training, when branching on my own and started South Bay K-9 Academy in Southern California, back in 1994.

[I'm retired now actively working with the public at large ... I love working with dogs, but owners of dogs (Jeff and Michelle not resist) took me quite Nuts!]

Anyway, Jeff and Michelle still have their Dalmatian, "Dotty," that now about 11 years old.

I always thought it odd that the only thing people seem to remember from my dog training book of 324 pages, entitled "Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer!" I recommend it to spit in your dog's food.

As if this were a magic key to get a dog's good behavior.

Anyway, seems the only thing that almost everyone remembers – of hundreds of dog training tips that I present in the book Dogproblems.com on our website and in our discussion forum.

Why do you recommend spitting in your dog food?

Because you marking the dog food with its aroma. And because the alpha dog in the pack always eats first.

This is a subtle way to tell your dog that you are the pack leader. But this alone will not. You need to be acting as a leader of the pack in all aspects of the life of your dog, too. Become the first to pass through a door. Or tell your dog where to draw up, and when allowed to eat. And making sure to go ahead and enforce any and every command you give.

Volume lot of guff from people – especially other dog trainers – who misinterpret my advice and I think spitting on feeding your dog is the only thing that has tol will do the alpha dog. It is not.

Well, no more than 100 other subtle things you must do to communicate that they are the pack leader. Whenever I try to that the new owners of dogs that are doing more things to reinforce that you are the pack leader for your dog, your dog will see you as the leader group faster. Spitting in your dog's food is just one more thing to do to help.

So anyway, my dinner with Jeff and Michelle:

When asked how he was doing Dotty, Dotty Jeff replied that it was absolutely fantastic. The best dog I'd had, due in part to their diligence and consistency in applying the dog training techniques I showed them.

But then Jeff said something very interesting: "I'm still spitting in food. In fact, not even touch the food until after spitting on him. "(Note: The alpha dog always eats first!).

So There you go: A further evidence that some of my more extravagant dog training techniques really work!

Even though you may feel stupid doing so.

That's it for now, folks!

PS Jeff and Michelle are able to take Dotty anywhere – off leash – and I know she will respond the command immediately. Even taking your camping quite often … that Dotty loves it!
