Question: What King and Queen of Spain, Emperor of Japan, and
Princess of Monaco, all have in common?
Answer: All were at the festival of Guelaguetza in Oaxaca.
The pride of Oaxaca, which was held in the last two Mondays of July, this year in July
17 and 24, Guelaguetza Festival in Oaxaca's answer to Rio de Janeiro
carnival. Planning and preparation take about a year and the results
prove it. It's spectacular to say the least. During the weeks preceding the
Festival already pervades virtually every aspect of life Oaxacaqueà ± o.
From the morning around 9:00 or 10:00, brightly dressed folk
dancers from each of the seven regions of Oaxaca perform traditional dances
live music and launch product offerings of fruit and viewers in the
popular end of each routine. Culminating the festival are the colors
Pineapple dance by women agile Papaloapan region and the
exciting, majestic, Feather Dance by men representing the Spanish conquest of
Mexico. Seating for the event, held in the Auditorium of the Guelaguetza in a
the hill known as Cerro de Fortin "north overlooking the city, go on
months before the sale in the event. There are areas to be free in this
the outdoor stadium, but you should be there too early for any hope of a
seat. You'll have to wear a hat broad-brimmed or umbrella and take a lot
water for drinking, as the festivities last for several hours. Saturday
before the main event, delegations from each of the seven regions of a stage
colorful, musical ride through the streets of the city.
If you miss the party, do not worry, videos of previous festivals is
usually on sale at travel agencies in the city. Ask around for availability
and the best prices.
