Camping in the Shenandoah Valley area (Va)?

Can anyone think of nice areas to camp in the area of the Shenandoah Valley in VA (Blue Ridge Mountains, Skyline Drive, etc)? My boyfriend and I are hiking and camping experience and are in decent physical shape. We are looking for a camping area, where we will be unlikely to encounter other hikers / campers – not "family CAMPING" sites. However, they also do not want to completely rustic camping We have the equipment to purify water, etc. I remember in a long drive to the mountains and find little clear out the dirt roads where we camped and never saw another soul the entire time we were there. Looking for something similar to it. Can anyone recommend an area / path / etc?

You sound like you like to explore off-road forest service roads. There are several mountain ranges west of Skyline Drive on the other side of the valley, running parallel to the Blue Ridge for several hundreds of kilometers. where you'll find a lot of FS roads. The closest are at the George Washington National Forest. Http: / / www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/ A Further west is running on the Monongahela National Forest. http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/mnf/ two forest dispersed camping allowed almost anywhere outside the camps. I've been through the area many times and find the point of withdrawal to the camp is very easy. You can also stop at a ranger station and ask for advice.
