Camping San Diego California

Help me with an itinerary for a 3-day camping/photo tour of Southern California. Leaving from San Diego.?

My wife and I are taking a 3-day weekend to drive around Southern California and explore our new state. We’re new to San Diego and haven’t had a chance to explore SoCal. We’re both photographers and are looking for some photogenic sites. We’d like to pack a few coolers full of food and car camp for three nights.

We thought we’d leave it to the hive mind to create an itinerary for us. We’re open to anything. We’ve heard that the Salton Sea is a very photogenic spot, and some photos on Flickr confirm this, so we’d like that to be part of the itinerary.

Otherwise I’d love to hear some suggestions for places to camp/photograph/visit!

The Salton Sea is an okay place to visit but it would be hard to stretch into a 3 day trip. If you head east on the 8 freeway and go out a little past Alpine, you will end up in the Cuyamacas. There are a lot of places to camp up there at Mt. Laguna and there is a wide range of scenery that would be a photographers dream. You can catch some amazing sunsets from the mountains as well as hike up the trails. There is a lake in the Cuyamacas and a quaint little town called Julian that is in driving distance. It is kind of historic and has some awesome apple pies. It’s a great place to spend the day and take some pictures. Have fun exploring!
