Austin is home to one of the best metropolitan parks in the state. With sand volleyball courts, a nine-hole disc golf, football and rugby, and two enormous multi-use fields for sports enthusiasts, Zilker Park is also home to Barton Springs pool, the Zilker Zephyr train, botanical gardens, a playground huge, miles of walking and cycling, and many other permanent services in over 350 hectares. A regular destination for Austin, the park is also home some of the most popular events in the city, including the Way of Light, the Austin Kite Festival and the Austin City Limits festival of music.

Over three acres large, Barton Springs swimming favorite is Austin, hole. The Fed from underground springs, the group maintains an average water temperature of 68 degrees all year – the majority is invigorating, and a welcome respite from the summer heat. With a separate area that welcomes dogs in addition to human swimmers, Barton Springs has attracted a diverse crowd of swimmers for more than a century. Zilker Park is located near downtown in the historic Barton Hills Neighborhood. Barton Hills homes were built in the 1940s and the offer of a quaint neighborhood charm of tree-lined streets surrounding the park.

Playground Zilker Park is huge, with much action for toddlers and older children too. Slides, swings, climbing structures, and even an antique fire truck to attract kiddos, while banks and picnic tables are available for less active. Adjacent to the playground is a snack bar with cold drinks and a limited menu. Just across the bar is the train station to the Zilker Zephyr, a miniature train that takes visitors on a tour of 20 minutes around the park. Along the creek, under a bridge, and past people waving Hi, the train delights kids of all ages.

With eighteen acre grounds to explore, the Botanical Garden of Zilker is a beautiful and serene destination. Among its many horticultural attractions are a Japanese garden, xeriscape demonstration garden, rose garden, cactus garden, bedding displays, floral display garden, butterfly trail and garden, herb garden and beauty products. The dinosaur statue located in the Hartman Prehistoric Garden is always a hit with children, and the Interpretive Center has a wealth of information.

Hillside Theater Zilker is perfected situated to allow the public to bring a blanket or lawn chairs and picnic while enjoying the different performances. The home of the annual Blues the green series, the theater also gives concerts in many different styles of music in addition to presenting Shakespeare in the Park in Austin.

The Sculpture Garden Umlauf and Museum is another tranquil cultural offering in Zilker Park, focused primarily on the work of American sculptor Charles Umlauf. With more than 130 sculptures, drawings and paintings located in their land of lush vegetation, which provide educational programs and visits, in addition to regular hours for public visits.

The Austin Nature and Science Center can also be found in Zilker Park, and is a fascinating and educational destination. With an interpretive center, education programs and summer camps, children of all ages will delight in seeing their rescued animal exhibit, and you can practice that junior archeologists in the mouth dinosaur.
