When visiting the Tampa / St. Petersburg area in Florida, we propose a kayaking trip to the Dunedin causeway. The road leads to Honeymoon Island State Park and access is available to Caladesi Island.

It's easy to start from the road. Your vehicle may be backed up water and can be left from which to explore the waterways area.

If you do not have a kayak, not a problem, one rental is right on the road.

My favorite is the route of the road. You paddle west and then cross under the road bridge west. This takes you to the east of the island. The trip will last approximately one hour and a half to complete. During the summer, make sure wear a hat, take drinking water and liberally apply sunscreen. Be sure to wear a lifejacket at all times. Rowing in the winter has some risks, but that is the fun part. One in particular is turning west around the north side of the island. The waves are strong during periods of wind. If you are not an experienced kayaker, you can be best to stay on the leeward side of the island where they were protected. Another danger is on the south side of the island where the Intracoastal inlet. This is an area root and the boats can not raise some interesting waves.

If you choose to paddle south of the road, you can travel to Caladesi Island where there is a hint of kayaks. Be careful when crossing the Intracoastal at that time for the same reason as the previous note. The trail is marked and leads through mangrove trees. You can pick up the track, near the marina at Caladesi Island.

Caladesi Island is not really an island, at least not now. In 1985, Hurricane Elena squarely in the path between Caladesi Island and Clearwater Beach. I found this out the hard way when I thought it is the name Caladesi Island could paddle around it. Since then I bought maps of the coast and bring these with me when I leave.

Small islands dot the area and if you feel adventurous can pack a tent, sleeping bag and supplies and camping on an island. As far as I know you do not need permission. Be sure to check weather reports and if possible bring a weather radio with you. A night under the stars is a great way to escape problems of the world.

For those who travel longer kayak is north Anclote Key. Anclote Key has a beacon of work and several trails. On the way will go through three Rooker Bar, a popular party area for local surfers and a great place to take a break, exit the kayak and stretching.

Also in the area is Howard Park with a beach and kayaking tour. The town of Tarpon Springs sponge is a little paddle, feasible.

Dunedin Causeway is a good place to start exploring ways and Northern Pinellas County.

Have fun and be safe!
